The Weiss Aug Group’s advanced prototyping capabilities now include a Laser Lab Technology Center, located at the Weiss-Aug Surgical Products Division in Fairfield, NJ. The new laser cutting and etching machines expand the capabilities of The Weiss-Aug Group to better support the demanding developmental requirements of today’s fast-moving markets.
Precision Laser cutting is faster, requires shorter setup, can process a vast array of raw materials and material tempers compared to that of traditional CNC technologies, all without sacrificing precision. This leads to quicker turnaround times for prototyping, putting parts in the hands of customers in hours, not days or weeks.
Equipment in the laser lab includes a new modulated fiber laser system. This latest generation technology enables laser cutting of materials with thicknesses to 1.5 mm (0.059 in) and delivers high-performance cut accuracy to ±25 µm ( ±0.001 in). Ultra-high-resolution cameras allow precise 2D and 3D engraving, as well as grave marking.
The combination of this technology with The Weiss-Aug Group’s 3D optical, laser and touch probe measurement systems allows fast deviation analysis and the creation of digital models for instant feedback to the iterative process. Customers benefit from this by being able to quickly test and modify prototypes to develop the best design.
The Weiss-Aug Group’s foundation in high volume precision metal stamping and insert-molding ensure that prototypes emulate the manufacturing process which result in designs that are cost effective and repeatable.
“At the end of the day, customers need to quickly iterate designs to feedback into final products and be assured that those part designs are manufacturable” says Michael Cullen, VP of Engineering at Weiss-Aug Surgical Products. “With Weiss-Aug’s 45+ years of experience and expertise in tooling, metal stamping and molding now combined with the latest prototype technologies, we can provide our customers with superior prototypes and superior manufacturing solutions”

Medtronic recently recognized Weiss-Aug as one of the top 12 suppliers from its 48,000 worldwide vendor base for the second year in a row.
A manufacturer of precision metal stamping, insert molding and assembly, Weiss-Aug has collaborated for more than 25 years with R&D teams at Medtronic’s Boulder, Colo. and North Haven, Conn. locations on the development and manufacture of surgical instrument components and sub-assemblies.
“Weiss-Aug is proud to be recognized by Medtronic with this ‘Supplier Excellence’ award,” said Elisabeth Weissenrieder-Bennis, EVP for surgical products and Weiss-Aug Mexico, in a prepared statement. “We continue to focus on improving its R&D capabilities, work to implement new technologies that reduce our time to market and always strive to provide Medtronic with the best quality products.”
The company received the award during a conference Nov. 6-7 at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Criteria for the award included a commitment to innovation, service, quality and value. In previous years, Weiss-Aug supported the development and launch of numerous sophisticated sub-assembly projects for Medtronic, totaling more than 30 discrete components.
The strategic partnership with Medtronic started in 1990. Both companies have grown tremendously and changed in the past two decades. In the past three years alone, Weiss-Aug has launched a plant in Monterrey, Mexico to better support the strategic needs of Medtronic, and invested in new technologies for machining, metal stamping, secondary processing and insert molding.
Weiss-Aug’s surgical products division just expanded its prototyping capabilities by installing best-in-class laser cutting and etching technology. Its new laser lab center optimizes prototype fabrication and supports low-volume production programs, the company said.

Dan Davis (Editor in Chief of FMA Communications Inc.) wrote an article about Weiss-Aug taking the competitive edge to the next level by offering in-die laser welding to its customer base.
As of Monday August 15th, Weiss-Aug's extensive solar system went live. This extensive installation includes 3 carport structures and 2 roof installations; one on the molding plant and one on the stamping plant. This effort is part of an ongoing green initiative for Weiss-Aug.
Weiss-Aug recently passed its ISO:13485 audit. The audit's results showed no major non conformances as well as no minor non conformances. This is an outstanding finding as there are usually some non conformance issues when audits are performed in many other cases. Positive comments were made regarding the depth and completeness of Weiss-Aug's quality system.
