Thomas Sheridan, 31
Stamping Operations Manager, Weiss-Aug, Inc.
Years at Weiss-Aug, Inc.: 6
Supervisor: Dan Cifarelli
Education: BS Industrial Management Systems Engineering, West Virginia University
Thomas’ contributions: “Tom has made many achievements in our manufacturing operations that have benefited the company’s performance and ability to compete on a world class level. He is well respected by even our most seasoned team members including his direct report, Andrew Campagna, Stamping Press Room Foreman, who has been with the company for more than 30 years. Andrew feels that Tom’s engineering background contributes to his excellent problem solving skills. He also mentions that Tom excels at team building through leading by example and putting trust in his team members. Tom arrived at the company shortly after it had gone through some economic difficulties and business challenges in the industry. Tom brought with him a different perspective and visions of a world class company that can compete in all markets.”
Why a career in manufacturing? “Early during my childhood, I knew manufacturing was a profession that I was destined to be in. In my years as a young child, I was always fascinated by the intricacies of machines and what it was that made them work. There was one occasion that I can vividly remember that had sealed my fate as a manufacturing engineer. I was four years old and was with my mother at the shopping mall. We somehow got detached and that is where my curiousness took over and I found myself at the escalator staring calmly at the technician as he repaired the broken section. My mother, who knew I was not interested in the merry-go-round or toy store like most little boys, eventually found me where she thought I would be; staring blindly at the inner workings of a piece of machinery. Ever since then I have been fascinated by how things work and what makes them work.”

Weiss Aug Now Offers In Die Laser Welding
August 5, 2011
Weiss-Aug, a leader in metal stamping, insert injection molding and assembly for the medical device industry now offers in-die laser welding. This unique combination of metal stamping and laser welding inside the stamping press eliminates the need for post stamping welding and assembly operations.
In Die Laser Welding Process:
Inside the progressive die, after the cutting and forming stations, specialized stations are utilized to position the area of the component to be lasered. The laser heads are aligned with these stations and the lasers emit a short burst which completes the weld when the press is closed. As the press opens, the components are 100% inspected by camera vision systems for any visual defect or tolerance defect. The component is then reeled up for additional operations or singulated per customer specification.
A leader in process development:
Weiss-Aug is one of the first companies in the US to offer this service to its customers. Typically laser welding operations are a separate assembly operation from other manufacturing operations. This leads to additional time and resources to deliver a finished component. Weiss-Aug’s New Program Development Group, a specialized engineering team focused on research and development of new products, developed this process for its customers to deliver a more cost effective and efficient manufacturing process.
Steve Czapla, manager of the group has used progressive metal stamping, a cost effective process to replace other metal manufacturing technologies for customers for many years. By adding the laser welding process to metal stamping, the group utilized an existing technology in a new way to deliver robust components at a lower cost point.
Expertise in Metal Stamping
Complex tooling, very tight tolerances and high speed of press operations are all very important considerations in the development of in-die laser welding which require extensive experience and tooling knowledge. Weiss-Aug has been providing precision metal stamping and complete in house fabrication of metal stamping dies to medical device companies for over 30 years.
Weiss-Aug is your partner for innovative and technically sophisticated custom insert injection molding, precision metal stamping and integrated component assembly. Weiss-Aug is ISO 13485 certified.
